Dental Inlays and Onlays in Dearborn Heights

All of our inlays and onlays are created using impressions of the patient’s teeth, which ensures the optimal appearance and fit. The process of installing an inlay or onlay requires two separate visits to our practice. When the patient makes their first visit, impressions of their teeth will be taken, and a temporary restoration will be applied. The permanent inlay or onlay will be fitted during the second visit.

Inlays

A dental inlay is comprised of filling material bonded to the interior of a tooth. Inlays differ from onlays because they do not cover any of the tooth’s cusps. Instead, the only cover the area inside these points. Inlays are a great option when a tooth has too much damage to be repaired using a regular filling, but not so damaged that a full dental crown is needed. Since inlays are custom-fitted to the patient’s own tooth, the final result is typically stronger and more durable than teeth that have been restored with a standard filling.

Onlays

Onlays are distinguished from inlays in that they cover one or more of the tooth’s cusps. When an onlay is applied, the filling material is usually bonded to one or more of these points. In some cases, an onlay might be placed over the entire chewing surface of a tooth. Onlays are best used when a tooth is too damaged to be fully repaired with a standard filling, but a complete dental crown would be unnecessary. Just like inlays, our onlays are custom-made to provide a natural appearance and superb functionality.
