At Hoffman Smiles Ltd., your oral health with utmost comfort is our top priority, which is why we make sure you get the services necessary for your special and unique needs. Wisdom teeth extraction is one of the dental procedures that does not really sound as exciting but is just as equally important as the rest of dental treatments intended for improving an individual’s oral health.Wisdom teeth extraction is a procedure done by an oral or maxillofacial surgeon to prevent problems that may come up in the future. Some of the problems that can occur when wisdom teeth come in are:

  • Your jaw may not be large enough for them, and they may become impacted and unable to break through your gums.
  • Your wisdom teeth may break partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them. Food and germs can get trapped under the flap and cause your gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of infection.
  • More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or a cyst.
  • One or more of your wisdom teeth may come in at an awkward angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side.

Wisdom tooth removal is effective in preventing the following conditions:

  • Crowding of the back teeth.
  • A wisdom tooth becoming stuck in the jaw (impacted) and never breaking through the gums.
  • Red, swollen, and painful gums caused by a flap of skin around a wisdom tooth that has only partially come in.
  • Gum disease and tooth decay in the wisdom tooth, which may be harder to clean than other teeth, or in the teeth and jaw in the area of the wisdom tooth.

How is wisdom tooth extraction done?

Wisdom tooth extraction is done in a dentist’s office or in a hospital especially if you are at a high risk for complications. If there are any infections, the surgery will have to be delayed until the infection has been cleared up.Before removing the wisdom tooth, you will be given a local anesthesia to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. If several teeth will be removed, a general anesthesia will be required. It will numb the whole body and cause you to sleep through the procedure. You may also be advised not to eat or drink the day before so as to be prepared for the anesthetic. The surgery will involve your dentist opening up the gum tissue over the tooth and remove any bone covering the tooth. He will remove the tooth by separating the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone. There are times when the dentist will have to the cut the tooth into smaller pieces so it makes it easier for him to remove.Stitches may be needed after the tooth is removed. Some stitches gets dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. A folded cotton gauze pad placed over the wound will help stop the bleeding. The recovery period only lasts for a few days for most cases. You will be recommended with painkillers too by your dentist. The following are the tips you can follow to help speed your recovery.

  • Gently bite on the gauze pad periodically and change it if it becomes soaked with blood. Call your dentist’s attention if the bleeding continues after 24 hours.
  • Be careful not to bite the inside of your lip or cheek and tongue, while your mouth is still numb.
  • Prop up your head with pillows because lying flat down may just prolong bleeding.
  • Use an icepack outside of your cheeks for 15 to 20 minutes for the first 24 minutes.
  • Physical activities may increase bleeding so make sure you take time to relax after the surgery.
  • Eat soft foods and gradually incorporate solid food as the healing progresses.
  • To reduce swelling and relieve pain, gently rinse mouth with warm salt water several times a day. This is best recommended after the first day of the surgery.
  • Do not smoke for at least 24 hours nor drink from a straw. The sucking motion can loosen the clot and delay the healing.
  • Continue to brush your teeth and tongue regularly.
